My 2010 series ‘CAT SHOW,’ was shown in an exhibition at the recently vacated space which had previously housed the Jonathan Smart Gallery (now located at 52 Buchan St, Sydenham, Christchurch). It was culmination of the work produced during my final year at the University of Canterbury.
The paintings depict anonymous nude women, mostly taken from amateur pornography found on the internet, all holding onto a feline. The presence of the cats somewhat negates an overtly sexual reading of the works, instead prompting the viewer to question the reason for their inclusion. The play on the word ‘pussy’ is an obvious reading, but beyond that, the works aim to blur the lines between innocence and deviance, as well as to pay unashamed homage to both the magnificence of cats and the beauty of the female form.
